Ascochyta blight of cucumber

A fungal disease of cucumber caused by Ascochyta cucumis (teleomorph Didymella bryoniae), affecting all above-ground plant organs under greenhouse conditions.

The pathogen is a fungus with two developmental stages: the anamorph Ascochyta cucumis and the teleomorph Didymella bryoniae, which often develop concurrently. The disease is most active during the fruiting period, affecting stems, leaves, and fruits.

Light-colored spots form on the stems, accompanied by exudate discharge and the abundant formation of black pycnidia, especially at nodes and sites where side shoots have been removed. Leaves become covered with large, irregular brown spots with chlorotic halos, and fruits acquire a 'boiled' appearance, turn black, and mummify, sometimes with gum exudation.

Specific races or pathotypes of the pathogen, as well as the generally accepted nomenclature of resistance genes in cultivated cucumber to this pathology, have not currently been defined. Breeding efforts are focused on using wild species, such as Cucumis hystrix, as potential sources of resistance.
