Lens culinaris Medik.
A fungal disease of lentils caused by the pathogen Ascochyta lentis (teleomorph Didymella lentis). It affects all above-ground plant organs, manifesting as lesions with pycnidia and reducing seed quality.
In the reference 4 varieties crop Lentil, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causal agent of the disease is the fungus Ascochyta lentis, which exhibits high specificity for the genus Lens. The infection affects leaves, stems, and pods throughout the growing season. Symptoms begin with the appearance of small light or yellowish spots 1–4 mm in size, which gradually enlarge, darken, and develop a distinct margin. The most important diagnostic sign is the formation of small black fruiting bodies, or pycnidia, in the center of the lesions.
Severe infection leads to premature leaf drop, dieback of stem tips, and pod deformation. Seeds on infected plants become shriveled and develop brown or purple-brown spots, which sharply reduces their germination rate. Genetic control of resistance to the pathogen can be monogenic recessive or controlled by two complementary dominant genes, with the resistance locus Ral1 identified in breeding programs.
