Variety traits
Lens culinaris Medik.
Lentil lodging is a critical biological trait that significantly impedes mechanized harvesting, triggers the development of fungal diseases, and leads to substantial yield losses.
In the reference 22 varieties crop Lentil, where this is mentioned in the description.
Lentil lodging resistance is assessed visually on a five-point scale. Five points are awarded to non-lodging or slightly lodging plants with upright stems, whereas one point is assigned in cases of severe lodging that makes mechanized harvesting practically impossible. Assessment is conducted during the bean filling and maturation stages, recording the time of appearance of the trait and the nature of the damage, including basal lodging or bush collapse.
The suitability of a cultivar for mechanical harvesting is determined not only by its ability to maintain an upright position but also by the height of the lowest pod attachment. Excessive nitrogen nutrition, high seeding density, and soil waterlogging contribute to lodging. Contact of the lower pod tiers with the soil due to lodging creates a favorable environment for the spread of ascochyta blight, anthracnose, and various rots, which negatively affects the quality of marketable grain.
