Fusarium Wilt of Lentil

Fusarium wilt of lentil is caused by the specialized fungal form Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis. The disease affects the root system and vascular tissues, causing chlorosis, yellowing, leaf drop, and subsequent plant death.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis. The pathogen exhibits high variability in aggressiveness; however, a clear international classification into races and pathotypes for lentil is currently absent. Characteristic symptoms of infection include browning of roots, yellowing of vegetative organs, stunting, and browning of xylem vessels. Under high humidity conditions, white-pink fungal sporulation cushions form on the lower parts of the stems of dead plants.

In breeding practice, resistance to this disease is determined by screening genotypes in infectious nurseries. Internationally recognized nomenclatures for specific lentil resistance genes to this pathogen have not been established. Breeding efforts are focused on identifying partially resistant lines and cultivars without isolating specific gene loci.
