Lentil plant height

The following classification based on stem height is adopted for lentils: short-statured varieties reach 15–30 cm, medium-statured ones — 30–50 cm, and tall-statured ones — 50–75 cm. Plant height is measured according to variety testing protocols on a sample of 25 individuals and is a determining factor for the height of the lowest pod attachment.

The height of pod attachment, which in short-statured forms is often only 8–10 cm from the soil, is critically important for reducing losses during combine harvesting, where an optimal level is considered to be 15–25 cm. There is a positive correlation between plant height, 1000-seed weight, and total productivity.

Lentil height is influenced by sowing dates, plant density, and environmental conditions. Early sowing promotes increased height and facilitates harvesting, whereas drought conditions lead to a significant reduction in this parameter. Excessive nitrogen nutrition can overly stimulate vegetative mass at the expense of seed productivity.
