Variety traits
Lens culinaris Medik.
A quantitative indicator of lentil seed productivity used to calculate seeding rates and assess yield potential. Values for the crop range from 25 to 99 g, depending on the cultivar type.
In the reference 13 varieties crop Lentil, where this is mentioned in the description.
Lentils are characterized by a wide range of 1000-seed weights, which allows for the classification of varieties into groups. Small-seeded Persian-type forms typically have a weight of less than 40 g, often falling within the 25–30 g range. Large-seeded varieties of the Egyptian or Chilean type reach 50–65 g, and individual specimens can reach 78–88 g.
This indicator serves as the primary tool for converting seeding rates from mass to seed count, which is necessary to optimize plant stand density. Heavier seeds provide better nutrient reserves for seedlings; however, under conditions of drought or extreme heat during the grain-filling period, the 1000-seed weight can decrease by 15–25%.
