The causative agent of Ascochyta blight in common vetch is the imperfect fungus Ascochyta punctata Naumov. The disease manifests as indistinct spots on leaves, stems, and pods, which eventually coalesce. Black, flattened pycnidia develop within the affected tissues, arranged in concentric circles.
The infection causes premature leaf drop and stem breakage. The pathogen's mycelium can penetrate the seeds, making the seed material the primary source of disease spread. Breeding efforts to control the disease are based on the selection of resistant samples from the VIR collection, as specific marker genes for resistance in this crop have not yet been described.
