Diseases
Vicia faba L. var. minuta (hort. ex Alef.) Mansf.
A complex of fungal diseases affecting Vicia faba var. minuta, manifesting as local leaf necroses of various colors and shapes. The primary pathogens are fungi of the genera Botrytis, Stemphylium, Alternaria, Cercospora, and Ulocladium.
In the reference 20 varieties crop Tick Bean, where this is mentioned in the description.
Key pathogens causing leaf spots on small-seeded faba beans include Botrytis fabae, which triggers chocolate spot disease characterized by a grayish center and a dark border. Dark brown lesions are caused by fungi of the genus Stemphylium, while alternaria blight, caused by Alternaria alternata and A. tenuissima, manifests as brown spots with a distinct yellow halo. Cercospora leaf spots (Cercospora fabae and C. zonata) and red leaf spot, caused by Ulocladium botrytis, also occur.
Breeding for resistance to these diseases is based on searching for quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that provide partial protection against chocolate spot. At the molecular level, defense genes have been identified, including VfPR4, which is involved in countering Alternaria alternata, and genes of the VfRLCK VII family. In variety trials, resistance assessment is carried out primarily through empirical field testing of the susceptibility of specific accessions.
