The causal agent of the disease is the fungus Cercospora carotae (Pass.) Solheim. The disease manifests on the leaves as small, circular or oval spots that are light brown with a straw-colored center and a dark border. Primary symptoms often appear on the petioles and leaf margins, causing them to curl and subsequently die off.
Under high humidity conditions, a grayish conidial sporulation layer forms on the underside of the leaves. Although the fungus does not infect the root crops directly, severe infestation of the foliage leads to the formation of small, deformed roots and complicates mechanized harvesting due to increased brittleness of the petioles. Unlike Alternaria blight, Cercospora leaf blight often develops on young, actively growing leaves.
