Beta vulgaris L.
A fungal disease of beet caused by the micromycete Cercospora beticola Sacc., which affects the leaves, causing the appearance of characteristic spots with borders and premature senescence of the foliage.
In the reference 16 varieties crop Beet, where this is mentioned in the description.
The pathogen Cercospora beticola Sacc. possesses high genetic plasticity and includes many races adapted to specific cultivation zones, which limits the effectiveness of regional cultivar resistance. The intraspecific structure of the pathogen is also characterized by the ability to form strains resistant to chemical control agents.
Symptoms appear as small, circular spots 2–4 mm in size, with a light brown or grayish-yellow center and a characteristic red-violet or reddish-brown border. As the disease progresses, the spots increase up to 1 cm, and under humid conditions, a grayish-white or dark gray sporulation layer forms on them, leading to yellowing, curling, and death of the leaves.
Beet resistance to the pathogen is polygenic in nature and not associated with single genes. The breeding process relies on identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) located primarily on chromosomes III, IV, VII, and IX, with the final evaluation of cultivars conducted based on the results of field trials in inoculated plots.
