Beta vulgaris L.
Sugar beet tolerance is the ability of hybrids to maintain root yield and sugar content under the influence of biotic factors, such as rhizomania and cercospora leaf spot, as well as abiotic stresses: drought, salinity, and nitrogen deficiency.
In the reference 13 varieties crop Beet, where this is mentioned in the description.
The evaluation of beet tolerance to biotic stresses is based on artificial inoculation and comparison of leaf apparatus infection intensity with root mass and sugar losses in relation to susceptible control varieties. Under abiotic stress, key indicators include morphological changes, such as biomass and root length dynamics, as well as biochemical markers, including the activity of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase enzymes.
For the quantitative assessment of the trait, an integrated tolerance indicator or Stress Tolerance Index (STI) is used, calculated based on plant productivity under both stress and favorable conditions. At the molecular level, DNA markers are used for early diagnosis, allowing the identification of specific genes responsible for adaptation to salinity and nutrient deficiency.
Highly tolerant beet genotypes demonstrate minimal reduction in root quality under negative impact, maintaining efficient assimilate partitioning into the root. The use of such hybrids minimizes yield loss risks, which can reach 70% during severe epiphytotics or drought, ensuring stable profitability in unfavorable areas.
