Cultivation
Mandevilla sanderi (Hemsl.) Woodson
Cutting propagation is the primary method for propagating Mandevilla sanderi due to the hybrid nature of the cultivars and their low seed productivity. The process requires a specific approach because of the presence of toxic milky sap and the high sensitivity of cuttings to substrate waterlogging.
In the reference 6 varieties crop Brazilian jasmine, where this is mentioned in the description.
For propagation, terminal or lateral shoots 6–15 cm long are used, selecting herbaceous material in the spring or semi-hardwood in the summer. The cut is made strictly below a node, as the root system forms only in this zone. An essential step is the removal of the white milky sap exuded at the cut to prevent negative effects on the rooting process, as well as the removal of lower leaves to prevent rotting.
Rooting is carried out in light, well-aerated substrates at a temperature of 20–25 °C under conditions of high humidity. Mandevilla cuttings are prone to rotting under excessive watering, which requires strict control of substrate moisture. The root formation process for this species takes from two to six weeks, and the vegetative method remains the only way to maintain the varietal characteristics of the hybrids.
