Cuttage — Petunia × hybrida

Petunia x hybrida hort. ex E. Vilm.

The primary method of vegetative propagation that allows for the preservation of varietal characteristics and the habit of modern F1 hybrids, which do not inherit parental traits through seed propagation.

In the reference 4 varieties crop Garden petunia, where this is mentioned in the description.

For propagation, apical shoots 5–7 cm in length with 2–3 internodes are used, from which buds and lower leaves are removed. The rhizogenesis process, provided that temperature conditions are maintained and moisture-retentive substrates are used, takes from 1 to 4 weeks, during which petunia demonstrates high plasticity and a rapid rate of root system regeneration.

Mother plants are prepared in advance by keeping them in a cool environment during the dormancy period and stimulating shoot growth with supplemental lighting starting in February. Cuttage is often combined with crown pinching: the severed tips, necessary for forming a bushy plant, serve as ready-to-use planting material, which ensures propagation efficiency.
