Cultivation
Saintpaulia ionantha H. Wendl.
Vegetative propagation of Saintpaulia using whole leaf blades with petioles, allowing for the development of daughter rosettes from the cut site within 3–4 months.
In the reference 6 varieties crop African violet, where this is mentioned in the description.
For Saintpaulia propagation, healthy leaves from the middle row of the rosette are used with a petiole 2–5 cm long, cut at a 45-degree angle. The optimal substrates for rooting are light, breathable mixtures based on peat with perlite, vermiculite, or sphagnum moss, as using water often leads to rotting of the material.
Leaf propagation does not guarantee the retention of traits in chimera and "fantasy" varieties, which may lose their specific petal coloration. The full development cycle of a plant from a leaf to its first flowering takes from 7–9 months to a year, and the use of mini-greenhouses with ventilation promotes more successful formation of offsets.
