Scape of ornamental allium

In cultivar testing of ornamental alliums, the scape height is measured as the distance from the soil surface to the base of the inflorescence. When evaluating this trait, morphometric indicators, stem strength, and lodging resistance are taken into account. A characteristic feature of the genus Allium is the absence of leaves on the scape.

The range of scape heights allows plants to be classified into low-growing (up to 50–55 cm), used in border plantings, and tall (more than 90–130 cm), used as vertical focal points. The height and strength of the scape determine a cultivar's suitability for floristic cut flowers and agronomic requirements, including the need for protection against strong winds.
