Cultivation
Allium L.
An agrotechnical method for growing bulbs in a limited volume of soil, requiring specific drainage control, temperature cooling regulation, and consideration of foliage senescence dynamics.
In the reference 10 varieties crop Ornamental Allium, where this is mentioned in the description.
For the successful development of ornamental allium in containers, a light, well-draining substrate is critical to prevent bulb rot. Containers must correspond to the height of the variety; large-flowered types require pots at least 30–50 cm deep to ensure peduncle stability and root system development.
Under container culture conditions, bulbs are at risk of rapid freezing; therefore, for spring flowering, they require a cooling period of 10 to 14 weeks at temperatures below 7°C, and in cold climates, protection against soil freezing. Nutrition is limited to balanced, slow-release fertilizers, as excess nitrogen negatively affects flowering.
Pot cultivation allows plants to be isolated from soil-borne pathogens common to the Alliaceae family. Due to early leaf senescence, which occurs even before the peak of flowering, agrotechnical practice often involves companion planting of ornamental allium with other annual or perennial crops to mask the foliage.
