Cotton Determinacy

Cotton growth does not cease automatically upon reaching a specific developmental phase but is regulated by external factors such as temperature, photoperiod, water availability, and the level of fruit load. In agronomic practice, managing this process is traditionally associated with the need to balance vegetative mass and boll formation to optimize yield.

Cotton breeding focuses on identifying genotypes with optimal flowering and development rates to create early-maturing and productive forms. The agronomic evaluation of the trait is based on studying the differences between monopodial and sympodial branches, the dynamics of fruit formation along the nodes of the main stem, and the total duration of the development cycle until boll opening.

The indeterminate growth habit causes uneven crop maturation, which creates technological difficulties during mechanized harvesting and necessitates the use of defoliants. Under stress conditions, such as nutrient deficiency, the plant is prone to premature completion of the development cycle, leading to fruit shedding and reduced productivity.
