The determinate growth type is characterized by limited development: the main stem and lateral shoots terminate in inflorescences, after which the plant ceases growth and concentrates resources on pod maturation. In contrast, indeterminate forms retain a vegetative apical bud and continue to form pods at different nodes throughout the growing season.

The trait is assessed as a qualitative characteristic of habit during variety trials according to VIR methodologies. Determinate varieties are distinguished by their compactness and uniform ripening, making them suitable for mechanical harvesting without the use of supports, whereas indeterminate forms often require the installation of support structures.
