Variety traits

Tomato determinacy

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A genetic trait of tomato growth habit, where the main stem ceases to grow after setting a specific number of flower clusters. This trait determines the ripening period, plant height, and crop management practices.

In the reference 3 183 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

In tomatoes, determinacy is expressed by the termination of the main stem growth with an inflorescence. Classic forms cease growth after the formation of 4–5 clusters, whereas super-determinate types terminate even earlier, and some groups after 8–10 inflorescences. Plant height usually ranges from 30 to 130 cm, and the position of the inflorescences depends on the morphological characteristics of a specific variety.

This trait is a decisive factor for agrotechnology: determinate tomatoes are characterized by a more concentrated fruit set and early ripening. Unlike indeterminate forms, they are more often pruned to 2–3 stems, and due to a more compact root system, they require strict control of irrigation and nutrient regimes. The dependence of plant height on environmental factors makes this trait flexible when growing in protected ground conditions.
