Tomato Late Blight

A fungal disease of tomato caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans, which affects all above-ground plant organs and is characterized by tissue necrosis under conditions of high air humidity.

The pathogen Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary causes the formation of irregular, water-soaked lesions on leaves with a whitish layer of sporulation at humidity levels of 76% or higher. Elongated necrotic streaks form on the stems, leading to fragility, while infection of the fruits begins with firm, brown lesions that subsequently cause tissue softening or desiccation.

In breeding practice, resistance to the pathogen is based on the introgression of genes from the wild species Solanum pimpinellifolium. The Ph-3 gene is considered most effective for breeding and is often used in combination with Ph-2. In international standards, the resistance code for this disease is designated as Pi.
