The primary pathogen of apple Phytophthora rot is Phytophthora cactorum. The disease affects the basal part of the trunk, causing the formation of brown spots and necrosis of the cambium, which turns an orange-red hue. When the trunk is girdled, the tree gradually withers, and the root system undergoes decay.
External symptoms are often masked by frost damage or fire blight. The pathogen can also infect apple fruits, causing localized areas of rot on them. Specific resistance genes to this disease in apples have not yet been described, so protection is based primarily on agrotechnical measures and the selection of suitable rootstocks.
