The tree reaches a height of 10–12 meters with a spreading crown up to 5 meters in diameter. Leaves are thin, dark green, with small serrations. The plant is characterized by abundant and early flowering with white or pinkish-white fragrant flowers gathered in umbellate inflorescences.
Fruits are small, up to 2 cm in diameter, red or yellowish-red in color with a waxy bloom. They have an astringent taste and serve as feed for animals and birds. The plant possesses high winter hardiness (USDA zone 4).
The cultivar is widely known in breeding as a rootstock, in particular the Robusta 5 form, which possesses immunity to fire blight, late blight, and woolly apple aphid. The hybrid originates from Northern China and was introduced to Siberia in the late 19th century.
