This is a small tree up to 10 meters tall with pubescent young shoots. The leaves are elliptical or ovate, up to 12 cm long, and noticeably pubescent on the underside. White flowers with pink buds, 2.5–3 cm in diameter, are gathered in inflorescences.
The fruits are small, 1–1.5 cm in diameter, oval or nearly spherical in shape, red or yellow in color, and the calyx falls off late. The plant has good disease resistance and is frost-hardy, withstanding USDA zones 4–8.
The species is used primarily in landscape design due to its abundant flowering and fruits that persist on the branches for a long time. The fruits are technically edible but are practically not consumed due to their small size and taste qualities.
