Malus rockii is a deciduous tree up to 10 meters tall with pendulous branches. The leaves are elliptical or ovate in shape and dark green in color with pubescence on the underside. The white flowers are gathered in inflorescences of 4–8, and the small red fruits with a diameter of 1–1.5 cm ripen in autumn and often remain on the branches during the winter period.
The plant is used for ornamental purposes, as well as a rootstock for cultivated apple varieties due to its good compatibility, productivity, and resistance to drought, waterlogging, and powdery mildew. The species possesses high winter hardiness, corresponding to USDA zones 4–8.
