The Ottawa-3 rootstock was obtained by crossing the Robin and Malling 9 varieties. In terms of vigor, it occupies an intermediate position between M.9 and M.26 rootstocks, allowing trees to reach 45–50% of the size of individuals on vigorous rootstocks. Fruits on trees with this rootstock may be smaller than on similar dwarf rootstocks.
The plant possesses high winter hardiness, which makes it suitable for northern regions. Negative characteristics include sensitivity to apple stem grooving virus, susceptibility to fire blight, collar rot (Phytophthora cactorum), and woolly apple aphid. Due to the difficulty of propagation by traditional stooling, the micropropagation method is often used.
