The P 22 rootstock provides tree growth at a level of 25–30% of that on a seedling rootstock, which makes it similar in vigor to the M.27 rootstock. The plants are characterized by high precocity and yield, as well as good winter hardiness.
Due to the characteristics of its super-dwarf growth type, trees on this rootstock require the installation of permanent support. In terms of agronomy, it shows high resistance to root and crown rot, moderate susceptibility to fire blight, and high sensitivity to woolly apple aphid infestation.
The rootstock is intended for establishing intensive and super-intensive commercial orchards with high planting density, including 'super-spindle' systems. It is suitable for grafting standard and vigorous apple varieties for the purpose of controlling their dimensions.
