Fusarium wilt of cucumber

Cucumis sativus L.

A systemic disease of cucumber caused by specialized forms of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum, affecting the vascular system and the root zone of the plant. It is characterized by loss of turgor, browning of stem vascular bundles, and the pathogen's ability to survive in the soil for a long period.

In the reference 26 varieties crop Cucumber, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease is caused by specialized forms of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, which affects vascular tissue, and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum, which causes stem and root rot. The fungus persists in the soil for up to 15–20 years in the form of chlamydospores and conidia, entering the plant through the root system.

Key symptoms include loss of leaf turgor, especially during the daytime, and specific darkening of the vascular system visible on a longitudinal section of the stem. In the root form, maceration of the tissues at the root collar is observed, potentially accompanied by the appearance of a white or pink mycelial bloom.

Breeding resistance in varieties to this pathogen is most commonly indicated by the general code F. Unlike many other vegetable crops, the specific nomenclature of resistance genes is limited in cucumber variety descriptions, and intraspecific variability of the pathogen is assessed using molecular analysis methods.
