The causative agent of the disease in tall fescue is the fungus Helminthosporium siccans, also known as Drechslera siccans. Disease symptoms appear from early spring to autumn as small dark-brown or purple-red spots on the leaf surface.
As the disease progresses, the spots increase in size, forming a characteristic light-colored center with a dark-purple or black border. In cases of severe infection, yellowing, browning, and necrosis of the leaves are observed, which in extreme cases lead to plant death and premature senescence of the foliage.
