Cultivation
Dianthus caryophyllus L.
Technology for growing carnations in a limited soil volume, focused on producing compact ornamental plants through breeding, pinching, and environmental parameter control.
In the reference 90 varieties crop Carnation, where this is mentioned in the description.
For the development of potted carnations, breeding series such as Sunflor are used, which require the mandatory application of plant growth regulators to prevent stem elongation. Plant density and compactness are achieved through multiple pinching, the frequency of which depends directly on the container volume.
An important requirement is high substrate aeration, achieved by adding 15% perlite, as well as strict irrigation control, as excess moisture in the spring triggers undesirable vertical growth. Planting density ranges from one cutting in 13–14 cm diameter pots to three cuttings in 20–25 cm containers.
Plant nutrition is based on the application of slow-release fertilizers, followed by the use of formulas with high phosphorus content in the early stages and magnesium during the active growth phase. The salt concentration in the substrate must be strictly monitored and should not exceed an E.C. of 2.0.
