Carnation flower stalk

Dianthus caryophyllus L.

The carnation flower stalk is a key morphological trait determining the market quality of cut flowers, measured from the base of the stem to the bud.

To evaluate carnation flower stalks, measurements of length in centimeters and stem thickness in millimeters are used. In variety testing practice, a grading system by height is adopted: short up to 20 cm, medium 20–40 cm, tall 40–55 cm, and very tall over 55 cm. Commercial cut flower varieties often reach 70–100 cm in height.

Market value depends on the strength and length of the stem, which must be capable of supporting a large flower. Agrotechnics vary depending on the type of variety: spray carnations have thinner, branching stalks that require the use of trellises. During vegetative propagation, it is important to note that vegetative shoots, rather than flower stalks, must be used for rooting.
