Potted lily production requires consideration of stem root formation, which necessitates providing a sufficient volume of substrate above the bulb for proper plant nutrition. Bud initiation and development depend on conditions during the first two weeks after planting, and genetically dwarf hybrids are primarily used for height control, as chemical retardants are often ineffective or prohibited.

Plants are sensitive to light levels: light deficiency leads to bud drop and leaf yellowing. When selecting a substrate, it is necessary to consider the pH requirements of specific groups (5.0–6.5 for Oriental and OT hybrids, 6.0–7.0 for Asiatic and LA hybrids) and to avoid components containing fluorine or excess superphosphate, which induce phytotoxicity.

The lily life cycle in a pot is short-term and requires pre-cooling of bulbs to simulate a dormancy period. Rooting is conducted at a temperature of 10–12°C, and after flowering, the bulb becomes exhausted, which makes subsequent care different from that of evergreen potted plants.
