The sour cherry is a light-demanding crop; therefore, excessive planting density leads to canopy closure and shading of the inner layers. This causes branch dieback, a shift of fruit bearing to the periphery, and a significant reduction in the overall productivity of the orchard.

The choice of planting density depends on the bearing type: bush-type cultivars have different requirements for nutritional area compared to tree-type ones. Modern intensive orchards utilize high-density planting schemes, such as 5 by 2.5 meters, which allows for the placement of up to 800 trees per hectare.

The use of high-density schemes with spacing between trees of less than 3 meters is permissible only when using growth-restricting rootstocks and performing regular intensive pruning. Determining density is a long-term decision that must also account for machinery access and the convenience of harvesting.
