Maize plant density is the number of plants per unit area at the time of harvest, which determines yield and grain quality. This parameter is critically dependent on the biological characteristics of the hybrid, moisture availability, and the intended use of the produce.

For maize, the optimal stand density is determined by the maturity group and morphotype of the hybrid: early-maturing and compact forms allow for higher density, while tall and spreading hybrids require more space. Plant height is also considered when selecting density, as there is an inverse relationship between it and plant population.
Excessive crop thickening intensifies intraspecific competition, leading to delayed development of reproductive organs, increased anthesis-silking interval (ASI), and an increase in the number of barren plants. Under moisture-deficit conditions, density is reduced to avoid resource shortage, whereas with sufficient moisture, a dense stand promotes better canopy closure and effective weed suppression through soil shading.
