Cultivation

Chrysanthemum Bedding

Chrysanthemum L.

The use of chrysanthemums in flower bed compositions is based on managing plant architecture, maintaining planting distances according to cultivar groups, and accounting for the shallow root system.

In the reference 86 varieties crop Chrysanthemum, where this is mentioned in the description.

Managing the shape of a chrysanthemum in a bed depends on the biological characteristics of the group: Chrysanthemum multiflora is genetically capable of forming a spherical bush, whereas Korean and cut-flower varieties require pinching of the growing point at the beginning of the vegetative stage and repeated shaping to achieve the desired architecture.

When designing flower beds, adhering to planting density is critical: for multiflora, the minimum distance is 80 cm, while for Korean varieties, it should correspond to the diameter of a mature bush. Violating these standards suppresses the plants and reduces the decorative appeal of the lower tier.

The chrysanthemum root system develops parallel to the soil surface, which requires shallow planting and mandatory drainage using a layer of sand. Due to late flowering dates, the crop effectively complements ornamental grasses and other late-blooming perennials, maintaining a decorative effect until November.

Chrysanthemums in bedding displays often serve as mobile elements when the container cultivation method is used, which allows for moving the plants to a sheltered location during frosts or after the flowering period has ended.
