Successful heather cultivation in containers is based on maintaining the viability of the plant's symbiosis with soil fungi, which replaces the functions of root hairs. For this reason, the crop requires a specialized acidic substrate based on sphagnum peat with a pH range of 4.0 to 5.5, as neutral or alkaline environments cause the plant to wither and die.
Despite the species' general winter hardiness in open ground, the heather's root system is extremely sensitive to freezing when grown in containers, making overwintering outdoors risky. In landscape design, the plant is often used for temporary seasonal displays, and if kept indoors, it must be provided with cool conditions of about 10–12 ºC.
