A viral pathology of sugar beet caused by the Beet curly top virus (BCTV), which is transmitted by the beet leafhopper Circulifer tenellus.

The pathogen belongs to the family Geminiviridae and the genus Curtovirus, being a DNA-containing virus. Infection occurs exclusively through the leafhopper Circulifer tenellus. The disease is characterized by the inward curling of young leaves, their thickening, and the development of wart-like outgrowths along the veins, which may also acquire a purplish hue.
On the root crops, the disease manifests as stunted growth, deformation, the appearance of dark concentric rings in the vascular tissue, and excessive development of lateral rootlets. Plants significantly lag in development and may die at early stages. Breeding programs for resistance are limited; however, the KDH13 line is considered promising material, as it exhibits mild symptoms during systemic infection.
