This trait is most pronounced in primitive forms and certain subspecies, such as popcorn, whereas most modern hybrids are bred for single-ear development and the absence of tillers.
A high propensity for lateral shoot formation reduces the crop's processability, complicating mechanical harvesting and post-harvest grain handling. Tillers compete with the main stem for nutrients and moisture, which negatively affects crop quality and size; therefore, breeding is aimed at creating uniform stands without lateral branching.
Nevertheless, the moderate plasticity of hybrids may be significant at low plant densities, where the formation of additional ears on tillers allows for partial compensation for thin stands. The evaluation of this trait in breeding is conducted using descriptive methods during the phenotyping of collections.
