The pathogen is the oomycete Hyaloperonospora brassicae, which manifests as chlorotic angular spots on the upper side of the leaves and a characteristic grayish sporulation coating on the underside. Under high humidity conditions, the affected areas rapidly necrotize, leading to the curling and death of the leaf blade.
Unlike many other cruciferous crops, downy mildew on radish can be systemic in nature. On root crops, the disease appears as dark epidermal spots, and the internal tissues develop a characteristic mottling or black coloration, which completely ruins the marketability of the produce. Infection of seed-bearing plants results in underdeveloped pods and the formation of low-quality seeds.
