Double-flowering is a decorative trait in roses defined by the number of petals in a flower, which varies from simple forms with fewer than 8 petals to very double forms having over 70.

The classification of roses by the degree of double-flowering includes simple forms (up to 8 petals), semi-double (8–15), moderately double (21–29), medium double (30–39), double (more than 40), and very double (over 70 petals). This trait is often associated with the transformation of stamens and pistils into petals, which, in extreme cases, leads to the reduction of reproductive organs and the necessity for vegetative propagation only.
A high degree of double-flowering increases the decorative appeal of the flower, but it decreases its resistance to atmospheric precipitation, causing the petals to become waterlogged and rot. The stability of this trait depends on growing conditions and the age of the plant, while for commercial cut flower varieties, double-flowering is a targeted breeding trait.
