Monilinia blight of Vaccinium

Vaccinium L.

A fungal disease of berry crops of the genus Vaccinium, known as "mummy berry," caused by highly specialized species of the genus Monilinia. It is characterized by a biphasic infection cycle: spring shoot blight and subsequent fruit mummification.

The disease is caused by the fungi Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi, which affects blueberries, as well as Monilinia urnula and Monilinia baccarum, found on lingonberries and other Vaccinium species. The pathogens belong to the section Disjunctoriae, which is characterized by the presence of disjunctors in mitospores.

The disease cycle includes a primary phase of spring infection via ascospores germinating from overwintered sclerotia, which causes wilting and browning of young shoots and flowers. The secondary phase involves the insect-mediated dispersal of conidia to flowers, resulting in fruit losing commercial quality, hardening, changing color, and transforming into black sclerotia.

Genetic resistance of Vaccinium crops to the disease has not been described through specific R-genes or markers. Breeding varieties for resistance is based on the evaluation of phenotypic responses under field conditions, with cultivars classified as relatively resistant or tolerant.
