The garden strawberry is characterized by limited resistance to low-temperature stress. The root system in the crown zone begins to suffer damage at temperatures of -8…-10 °C. Without snow cover, a drop to -10…-15 °C causes significant freezing, and temperatures of -18…-20 °C lead to plant death. Snow cover significantly increases survival rates: with a depth of 5–10 cm, plants can withstand frosts down to -30 °C, and with 40–50 cm, up to -40…-45 °C.

In the spring period, the critical temperatures for flowers and ovaries are -1.0…-1.5 °C. When assessing frost resistance, key indicators are the degree of damage to the rhizome and apical buds, which are determined by artificial freezing methods in laboratory conditions or through field variety trials after wintering.
