A fungal disease of butternut squash caused by the obligate pathogens Podosphaera xanthii and Golovinomyces cichoracearum. It manifests as a white coating on leaves, stems, and petioles, leading to reduced photosynthetic activity and crop yield.

The causal agents of powdery mildew on butternut squash belong to the order Erysiphales. Symptoms begin with the formation of small, circular spots with a white or grayish coating on the upper side of the leaf blade, which then spreads to the entire leaf surface, petioles, and stems. Severe disease development causes yellowing, desiccation, and premature leaf drop.
In butternut squash breeding, disease resistance is often linked to plant morphological traits, such as the density of trichomes and stomata on leaves, as well as the expression levels of protective PR-proteins.
