Peach Powdery Mildew

Prunus persica (L.) Batsch

A fungal disease of peach caused by the pathogen Sphaerotheca pannosa (Podosphaera pannosa), manifesting as a characteristic white bloom on young leaves, shoots, and fruits. The disease leads to organ deformation, premature defoliation, and a loss of fruit marketability.

In the reference 81 varieties crop Peach, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of the disease is the ascomycete fungus Sphaerotheca pannosa var. persicae, sometimes classified as Podosphaera pannosa. A characteristic feature of this fungus's biology on peach is its ability to overwinter as mycelium within infected buds, which facilitates early plant infection at the beginning of the growing season.

Symptoms of infection appear as a loose, powdery bloom that causes leaves to curl inward (boat-like) and shoot tips to twist. On fruits, the infection often spreads from the pedicel, triggering skin cracking and subsequent tissue rot.

In breeding for peach resistance to the pathogen, monogenic resistance systems analogous to other crops are not used. Research into resistance is focused on identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and analyzing the relationship between susceptibility and morphological features, such as the presence of foliar glands.
