x Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus
A fungal disease of triticale caused by the obligate biotroph Blumeria graminis. It manifests as a white, web-like coating on the above-ground organs of the plant, gradually spreading across all leaf layers.

The causative agent of powdery mildew on triticale is the ascomycete Blumeria graminis (DC.) Speer. The fungus affects all aerial parts of the crop, including leaves, leaf sheaths, stems, and heads. Pathogen development begins on the lower leaf canopy, where a white coating forms, subsequently thickening into cottony pads and changing color to yellow-gray or brown. In later stages, cleistothecia—small black fruiting bodies—form on the affected tissues.
Specific race classification of the pathogen for triticale is poorly defined due to the biological characteristics of the crop. In breeding efforts to ensure triticale resistance to the disease, approaches commonly adopted for the parental species—wheat and rye—are used. This takes into account the presence of Pm-series resistance genes inherited from wheat. Despite a general susceptibility to infection under high humidity and moderate temperatures, many triticale varieties exhibit increased resistance compared to wheat.
