Variety traits
Avena sativa L.
The test weight of oats is the mass of grain per unit volume (g/L), which characterizes the degree of kernel plumpness, the presence of impurities, and moisture content. This indicator is a key quality criterion for determining the grade of commercial grain lots.
In the reference 48 varieties crop Oat, where this is mentioned in the description.
For oats, test weight is measured using a one-liter grain balance with a falling weight according to GOST 10840-2017. A specific feature of this crop is the permissible discrepancy limit of 10 g when conducting parallel determinations, which is twice as high as the figures established for wheat, rye, or barley.
Oat test weight values vary within a wide range: low values are considered 420 g/L or less, medium values range from 460 to 540 g/L, and high values are 580 g/L or above. The working quality range is often defined between 400–510 g/L, with the minimum acceptable level for high-quality grain being 520 g/L.
High test weight in oats indicates high-quality endosperm filling, which increases nutritional value and the yield of finished products. Low values often indicate the presence of shriveled, sprouted, or damaged kernels, which leads to a decrease in crop grading and the reclassification of the grain mass into the category for feed use.
