Tissue necrosis in lettuce

Lactuca sativa L. var. crispa L.

Lettuce tissue necrosis manifests as a non-infectious tipburn caused by impaired calcium transport, or as a symptom of viral, fungal, and oomycete infections.

In the reference 8 varieties crop Leaf lettuce, where this is mentioned in the description.

Physiological necrosis or tipburn occurs due to impaired transpiration and calcium deficiency in rapidly growing tissues during sharp temperature fluctuations and excess nitrogen. Symptoms manifest as the dieback of leaf margins or tips, which may curl and crack, as well as physiological seed necrosis under stress conditions during formation.

Infectious necrosis accompanies diseases such as lettuce mosaic virus, impatiens necrotic spot virus, and mirafiori lettuce big-vein virus, causing vein damage and spotting. In breeding, resistance markers such as the RGC2 cluster and loci of the qINSV2.1 type are used, while tolerance to tipburn is achieved through selection for physiological adaptability.
