The European plum exhibits varying degrees of self-fertility; however, even for self-fertile cultivars, the presence of a pollinator increases yield and fruit quality. The most critical biological constraint is species specificity: the European plum is pollinated exclusively by other cultivars of the same species. Hybrid cherry plums and Japanese plums are unsuitable as pollinators due to biological pollen incompatibility and differences in flowering times.

When selecting a pollinator, the genetic compatibility of cultivar pairs and the overlap of their flowering periods (at least 50–70%) are taken into account. For insect-mediated pollen transfer in commercial orchards, the distance between the primary cultivar and the pollinator is limited to 15–20 meters for self-sterile forms. Evaluation of cultivars also considers the effective pollination period, which is determined by the genetically conditioned longevity of the ovule and the receptivity of the stigma.
