For Guzmania, the primary organ for water absorption is the central leaf rosette, which forms a natural reservoir. Water is applied directly into this funnel, where it should be regularly replenished to prevent stagnation and subsequent tissue decay. During the autumn-winter period, watering into the rosette is reduced to avoid plant rot under lower temperatures.

The substrate for this crop should be kept only moderately moist. Excessive soil moisture is unacceptable, as it provokes the development of root rots, including Phytophthora and Fusarium pathogens, due to the epiphytes' high sensitivity to impaired gas exchange. The quality of irrigation water must be high; the use of soft, room-temperature, settled water that is free of chlorine and lime is recommended.
