The root system of the avocado is shallow and extremely sensitive to oxygen deficiency; therefore, the crop requires good drainage and does not tolerate waterlogging, which triggers rot development. The plant also demonstrates high susceptibility to irrigation water quality, especially to excess chlorides, which requires strict control of salt composition.

Critical periods for the water regime are the flowering, fruit-setting, and active fruit development phases; moisture deficiency during these times leads to fruit drop and physiological disorders of the fruit. Mature trees require on average 1000 to 1300 mm of water per year, with moisture monitoring most often carried out by sensors in the root zone.

For commercial cultivation, drip irrigation and micro-sprinklers are the most effective, as they allow for the maintenance of a stable moisture level without over-irrigation. Precision irrigation management in this case serves as a key tool for preserving soil aeration and maintaining plantation productivity.
