Avocado is an evergreen tree with naturally high vigor, which, in commercial production of the Hass cultivar, creates issues related to canopy overcrowding and difficulties in performing protective treatments and harvesting operations. There is an inverse relationship between growth energy and precocity: less vigorous trees transition to active fruiting more quickly and distribute resources more efficiently.

Vigor assessment is conducted qualitatively by categories — high, moderate, or low — based on the intensity of vegetative flushes and the speed at which the tree reaches specific dimensions. Significant influence on this parameter is exerted by the genetics of the scion and rootstock, as well as the phytosanitary condition of the root system, in particular, infestation with Phytophthora root rot.

The search for genetically less vigorous forms is a priority for the implementation of intensive cultivation technologies; however, on a commercial scale, there are practically no fully dwarf cultivars available. Consequently, vigor management is achieved through the selection of rootstocks, optimization of planting schemes, and regular pruning.
